Kasumiga Pearls: a Legacy of Japan

Among all the types of pearls used in fine jewelry, Kasumiga pearls are undoubtedly among the most fascinating. Originally sourced from one of Japan’s most unique natural environments, they captivate connoisseurs with their naturally rosy colour, soft lustre and authentic character.

A very specific place of origin
At first, Kasumiga pearls were cultivated in Lake Kasumigaura, located about 100 kilometres northeast of Tokyo. It is the second-largest lake in Japan and an extremely rich freshwater ecosystem. This environment offered ideal conditions for pearl farming: calm water, rich in nutrients and perfectly suited to the slow growth of molluscs. Today, most Kasumiga pearls are cultivated in China. A few exceptional pearls originating from Japan still exist, but they have become extremely rare… and are considered true treasures by connoisseurs.

Unlike Akoya pearls (which are grown in the sea), Kasumiga pearls are freshwater pearls, but they are considered one of the most refined varieties in this category due to their highly artisanal farming methods and the meticulous care devoted to each mollusc.

Limited production and rare craftsmanship
The cultivation of Kasumiga pearls began in the 1990s, with only a handful of family-run farms. The cultivation period is long (generally 3 to 4 years), and the results are highly unpredictable. This is what makes these pearls rare and especially sought after by high-end jewelry designers.

The harvesting process is entirely manual: each mollusc is opened by hand and the pearl is sorted according to its shape, surface and colour. Because of this limited production, Kasumiga pearls are often offered in very small series, or even as one-of-a-kind pieces.

Natural colours and organic shapes
What truly distinguishes Kasumiga pearls are their delicate natural shades — powder pink, lilac, peach, champagne… These are not artificial colourings, but natural hues, produced by the molluscs themselves according to the conditions of their environment.

Their shape tends to be slightly baroque, with soft, organic curves. Each pearl therefore has its own unique personality, which makes it a favourite choice for clients looking for a jewel unlike any other.

Why choose them?
Wearing a Kasumiga pearl means wearing a historic treasure from Japan, filled with poetry, craftsmanship and authenticity. They are perfect for anyone drawn to rare, natural and refined pieces, as well as jewelry lovers who want to step outside the traditional codes.
